Frequently Asked Questions

How does the process work?

What is "direct stitching?"

As opposed to a pre-made patch that one might stitch or adhere to a garment, "direct stitching" is the action of embroidering hundreds if not thousands of looped stitches (aka chainstitching) directly onto a garment until a design is rendered in full.

Am I limited to certain STAG products for direct stitching?

Yes, chainstitching creates a thick, stitched design on the back of the garment, so durable fabrics are required to support the design. Together, with Fort Lonesome, we have selected items that we think will make the very best canvas for your custom design.

Why do I have to purchase a direct stitch design along with an "eligible" product? Can’t I just have the patch?

Each direct stitch design is chainstitched directly onto the garment from scratch, so it's not a patch so much as a one-of-a-kind, stitched down embroidery. Each design is permanent and non-transferable.

Do you also sew the patches on for me?

Patches can only be purchased as single, stand alone items, free for you to sew on the item of your choice. These can be sewn on with a simple needle and thread.

Can I bring in or ship in my personal item to get a STAG exclusive patch?

At this point in time, we cannot offer personalized stitching orders due to demand and the fabric weight requirement of chain stitching.

Can I change the colors on any of the direct stitch designs or patches?

Unfortunately, no. All of our STAG exclusive direct stitch designs have been carefully selected and curated to bring you the best design and patch possible.

Will I be able to feel the stitching through the garment?

Depending on the thickness of the garment, you may or may not be able to feel the stitching through the garment. You likely won't feel it on a jacket but likely will feel it on a shirt.

How should I care for my garment?

Chainstitching is extremely durable, but all direct stitch garments should be dry cleaned instead of machine washed. If machine washed, the stitch design will shrink to a different degree than the garment itself and lead to puckering and bunching in the stitch down design.

How long will it take for my item to be completed?

Please allow for 6-8 weeks production time. All products are one-of-a-kind and made to order by a small team in Austin. We promise it’ll be worth it.

What exactly does final sale mean?

Please note that all direct stitching orders are final sale, meaning non-returnable and non-refundable for any reason. Once your order has been placed, your garment will will be sent to Fort Lonesome where they will begin expertly making your item into a wearable piece of art. Due to the nature of embroidery, stitching cannot be removed once it has begun without damaging the garment.

Who is shipping my item to me?

After you place your order, your item and information will be sent to Fort Lonesome for stitching. Once it is complete, we will ship it out to you as quickly as possible.

Who should I reach out to if I have any questions about my order?
